Cuo size comparison
Small and Large up side by side

Bloody Buddy menstrual cups are a U.S based company. The Bloody Buddy Cup is available in three colors (Red,Black , and Pink) with 2 sizes small and large. The cups come in pairs ONLY. Either 2 small, 2 large, or a Small and a Large. To give the cups a thorough test I got the mixed option.

Features and Dimensions

Both cups come with a flat stem and 3 grip rings across the outside of the cup. The rim is firmer than the base with a ridge of stiff silicone.

Small cup 20mL (to the holes)

Length: 7.5 cm (with stem)

5.5 cm (to base)

Diameter: 4.5 cm edge to edge

Large Cup 25 mL (Ditto)

Length: 8 cm (with stem)

6 cm (to base)

Diameter: 4.5 cm

The Cups in Use

Each cup is shaped almost the same, a gentle "U". The small cup is slightly softer at the base than the large cup otherwise, the cup rim firmness's are the same. The stems on each can be trimmed if it is not necessary to retrieve the cup. The outside has three grip rings and four suction release holes. These were punched out completely on the cup. I had no issues with the quality of the but there are side seams which for some users may be uncomfortable.

The small cup is slightly v- shaped at the base. The rim are harder to open but easier to insert. The softer base means some users will experience less cramping as the PC ( pubococcygeal ) cannot clench around the silicone, once the cup is full.

The large cup is firmer at the rim and is longer than the second cup. At 25 mL the cup has a large capacity but is not the be all end all of of capacity of menstrual cups. The firm rim stopped more leaks than the small cup.

My Thoughts

The Bloody Buddy cups are a great value for the price. At $30 per 2 cups this is a $35 dollar savings. A single cup costs around $40 dollars. The silicone is solid quality and the stem are well made from the form.

Of the two I prefer the larger size. The firmer rim and capacity meant I could wear it for 6-7 hours. The small had to be changed every 4-5 hours (about the average time of use for a regular tampon) Added to this, I am fairly active with strong PC muscles. The Small cup collapsed collapsed during both yoga and a martial arts practice. The Niagara Falls inside my uniform was only just held by the backup pad, preserving both the panties and my pride. Other athletes beware, the small is NOT strong enough for your Olympian muscles.

Neither stem or grip ridges were irritating during wear. If you are extremely sensitive I recommend a rounded flush rim. (Either a skoon cup,Luna Cup, Ruby or Sibelle) I did not trim the stem, as I have a high cervix. If the stem is outside the vagina, I imagine it is soft enough not to cause discomfort.

What the small cup does well is reduce the risk of discomfort via cramping. Cramping during menstruation, is the result of inflammation and contractions of the uterus and opening of the cervix. These contractions extend into the back, abdominal, and vaginal muscles.Consequently, a softer cup reduces cramping because the vaginal muscles push against the silicone less than a firm cup. In addition the small size is ideal for teens or smaller people interested in trying a cup for a good price.

Finally, I refer to the price again. At $15 per cup it is the ONLY cup at this price point that is U.S made and FDA approved. Well-made and U.S manufactured the best of both worlds. Menstrual cups below this price, ooze the I-want-a-cup-but-might-poison-my-hoo-hoo-if-I-buy-one, knock off cups. It is available through Amazon,Ebay, and directly from the website listed below.
